El Paso — UTEP softball’s Kayla Oranger was tabbed All-Midwest Region second team as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) on Thursday.This is the first all-region honor for the senior standout.
The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region and all the honorees will now be eligible for selection to one of three 2013 NFCA Division I All-American teams.
The native of Elgin, Ill. wrapped up her final season in the Orange and Blue with a .323 batting average and eight RBI. Oranger set a career-high with nine stolen bases and led the Miners with 53 hits. Her 94 putouts ranked third on the team, while her 23 runs scored ranked second. Oranger’s numbers in conference-only games were stellar – she ranked in the top 10 in batting average (.363) and top five in hits (29). The slugger led theMiners with 17 multi-hit games, including two three-hit games and a 4-for-4performance in a win over South Dakota State in mid-February.
Oranger finished her career with 23 stolen bases (tiedsecond in the record books) and 38 RBI. Her five runs scored against Brown on March 3, 2012 is a school record. Oranger, who played at second base for the majority of her career, finished with 289 career-assists (third in the record books).
