Washington (CNN) — President Obama's pick for labor secretary is one step closer to the job despite Republican backlash.
On Thursday, the Senate Labor Committee voted along party lines to approve Thomas Perez for the position.
You'll remember, last week Republicans blocked the committee vote by invoking a rarely used procedural tactic.
Now that the vote has cleared the committee, the full senate will take up the matter.
A vote could be scheduled as early as next week but GOP lawmakers are expected to filibuster.
Perez has come under heavy fire from Republicans for his actions when he headed the civil rights division at the Department of Justice earlier in the Obama Administration.
