El Paso, TX (KDBC) — El Paso Congressman Beto O'Rourke is calling for an increased focus on trade with Mexico. O'Rourke wants to redirect the emphasis on border security to trade, citing a record number of deportations and apprehensions last year and a doubling of Customs and Border Protection agents since 911. He says our borders are more secure than ever.
Instead, he wants to focus resources on the legal and efficient movement of people and goods across our border.
"More than $80 billon in trade of Mexico passes through el paso every year and that activity supports 50,000 jobs in this community alone and more than 6 million jobs across the country so increasing trade making it easier for secure and trusted trade and travelers cars and people to get through our ports of entry is critical if El Paso is going to create more jobs and economic opportunities," said O'Rourke.
Congressman O'Rourke hopes the meeting with both presidents will help fix what he calls a broken immigration system so that millions of people living in the shadows can come out and become productive members of their communities.
