The UTEP softball team will face No. 25 Tulsa as seniors Charissa Ballesteros, Ashley Collazo, Kayla Oranger, Cynthia Villastrigo, and Kayleigh Walts willplay their last series at Helen of Troy Softball Complex.
The Miners (12-30, 1-16 C-USA) and the Golden Hurricane (34-13-1, 13-5 C-USA) will play a three-game series to close out the home portion of the schedule. Saturday’s doubleheader is slated for 2 p.m. MT, while the seniors will be honored after Sunday’s Noon-start series finale.
Collazo, who is in her fifth season in the Orange and Blue, has gone deep twice and ranks third on the squad with 13 RBI. The Miners posted a 5-0 record when she had multiple RBI games. The native of San Antonio, Texas leads the Miners with 77 assists.
Walts has climbed up the UTEP record books during her senior season. The native of Flower Mound, Texas has been solid behind the plate as she ranks first in Conference USA catching runners trying to steal bags (25) and ranks second catching runners ‘napping’ (six). With these numbers, she now holds the career record for runners caught stealing (60) and picking runners off (13). At the plate, Walts’ three long balls and 19 RBI rank second on the team.
Oranger has had a solid career in the Sun City. The native of Elgin, Ill. holds the school record with five runs scored in one game (vs. Brown 3/3/12). This season she is hitting .297 with seven RBI and leads theteam with nine stolen bases. Her .346 batting average ranked third behind 2012 star-sluggers Camilla Carrera and Chelsea Troupe.
Ballesteros transferred from Pima Community College. The native of Tucson, Ariz. has recorded four RBI and three doubles this season. She began her career in 2012 where she contributed eight RBI.
Villastrigo, also a transfer, started her career in the 2012 season where she led the Orange and Blue with seven wins. The native of Monclava, Mexico has been used sparingly as she has started four games thisseason and has thrown 12.2 innings.
