El Paso born and Las Cruces raised boxer Austin "No Doubt" Trout went the distance in the Alamodome of San Antonio Saturday but lost a unanimous decision to Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in a unification bout.
On the line was Trout's WBC belt and Canelo's WBA belt to determine who was the best in the 154 weight class.
Trout (26-1, 14 KOs) led the score cards until the seventh round when Alvarez connected on a right hand that sent Austin to the mat for the first time in his career. It was an uphill battle for Trout from then on.
When the final cards were tallied the fight was scored 115-112, 116-111, and 118-109, all in favor of Canelo.
Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KOs) now holds the WBC and WBA Junior Middleweight belts.
