The UTEP track and field team will take the track one last time at home as they host the annual UTEP Invitational on Saturday at Kidd Field.
The field will include opponents Rice, North Texas, NM State, Academy of Art, WaylandBaptist, South Plains, Central Arizona and New Mexico Junior College.
The meet will begin at 10 a.m. (MT) with the women’s hammer throw, while the running events are scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. with the women’s 4x100m relay.
On thefield, Demetris Elia will be looking to improve his season-best mark registered at the Miners last home meet. The sophomore posted the 36th-best toss in the nation of 61.03m (200-03) in the hammer throw at the UTEP Springtime. The thrower is set to compete at 11:30 p.m.
Making a comeback for UTEP is Conference USA bronze medalist Richard Olsson. The junior had a stellar 2012 season recording a personal best of 71.58m (234-10) at the annual UTEP Springtime meet. Unfortunately, the thrower suffered an injury at the NCAA West Preliminary Championship and was unable to finish the season in the Orange and Blue. Olsson and El Paso native Kevin Rincon will take the field at 4:00 p.m.
The high jump will prove to be a competitive event featuring former Miner and Olympian Mickael Hanany. This will be the NCAA Champion’s first meet since he competed at the 2012 Olympics in London. Challenging Hanany will be Henderson Dottin, who registered a personal best of 2.25m at the 2008 UTEP Invitational. Representing the Orange and Blue will be El Paso native Xavier Baker. The sophomore set a personal best leap of 2.11m (6-11.00) at the UTEP Springtime meet. The event will begin at 3:30 p.m. and will include a field of 14 jumpers.
The long jump and triple jump will feature a group of Nike jumpers including Funmilayo Jimoh, Guy-Elphege Anouman, Kaba Badji Ndiss and Yoann Rapinier.
For the running events, the Miner will kick off at 2:10 p.m. with the men’s 4x100m relay, which will include Mark Jackson, Sven Zellner, Kristian Dillard and Anthony Wright. The squad is yet to finish the relay this season due to injuries and baton exchanges.
El Paso native Daniel Tarango will be taking the track in the 800m for the second time this season. The freshman was named the C-USA Athlete of the Week after he crossed the finish line with a time of 1:51.58 at the Texas Tech Open. His time earned him the top spot in the league.
Highlighting the women’s side will be the 100m hurdles, which will include five Miners. Leading the team will be C-USA Chmpion Janice Jackson, who opened the season clocking in a time of 13.11 W: 5.8. Also taking the track will be newcomer Brianna McGhee. The freshman posted a time of 13.26 W: 5.8 at the UTEP Springtime meet. The group is planned to start at 2:50 p.m.
Taking the field for the women’s team will be newcomer Nickevea Wilson in the triple jump. The sophomore took the track for the first time last week at the Texas TechOpen. She registered the 16th-best leap in the nation of 12.72m (41-08.75) and the top mark in Conference USA, thus far. The Miner will be going up against Academy of Art, Vashti Thomas. Thomas recorded a season best mark of 13.13m(43-01.00) at the 2013 Sun Angel Classic. The event will begin at approximately 5:00 p.m.
The women’s discus will feature two of the top-three Conference USA student-athletes (Sharae Robinson, Rice and Taylor Gunn, UTEP). For UTEP Taylor Gunn will becompeting in the event for the third time this season. The throw recorded atoss of 48.49m (159-01) in the Miners opening meet. The duo is scheduled totake the field at 2:30 p.m.
