Senior day was a special day for the UTEP tennis team as the Miners (12-11) won decisively, 6-1, over Utah State (5-10) on a beautiful Thursday afternoon at the El Paso Tennis Club.
“Good win for us today, it was one of those matches where you had to play well to win and the girls did,” head coach Mark Roberts said. “It could very easily be a match that if we don’t play the way we’re supposed to, then we find a way to lose and I’m very proud of them for that.”
Senior Martina Trierweiler, who was honored before thematch, added win No. 64 to her doubles career (ranks second all-time in school history) and notched win No. 19 in singles play for the season, a single-season career high. She won impressively in straight sets over Kristina Voytsekhovich.
To add to the special day, the Miners closed out the regular season with an undefeated record (6-0) in the Sun City, first time since 2004.
“We went undefeated at home this year, so it feels really good to do that,” Roberts added. “I think it’s a good accomplishment for the team.”
The Miners got things rolling by taking the doubles point to gain the early advantage. Trierweiler and junior Rebeca Calvillo had a bit of a challenge from McKenzie Davis and Kallie Sperry, but pulled out the win, 8-6, on the No. 1 court. The teammates upped their doubles record to 13-9. Juniors Gabi Vazquez and Marie LeBlond notched their 15th doubles victory as they defeated Hillary Hays and Voytsekhovich, 8-4, at No. 2.
On the singles side, freshman Jamie-Leigh Michau won her third straight singles match, winning easily, 6-1, 6-2, while fellow freshman Matilda Rose Tench won her eighth singles match by defeating Hillary Hays, 4-6, 6-1, 10-4. LeBlond (15-8) won, 6-2, 6-4, over Sperry, while Vazquez (16-7) was victorious after Julie Tukuafu retired.
The Miners will have a few days off before they head out to Houston, Texas for the 2013 Conference USA Championships, April 18-21.
