Wednesday, July 7: 25-year old Antonio Escalante has finally lined up a title fight, but not the one everybody hoped. Escalante will fight Edel Ruiz, August 6th at the Haskins Center, to be televised on Telefutura. Escalante, ranked as the #2 challenger in the featherweight division, had been hoping for a WBC, WBA or even an IBF title fight, but that will have to wait. Escalante is 23-2 with 14 knockouts, while Ruiz (Los Mochis, Mexico) is the current NABA champion with a record of 34-22-4 with 25 knockouts. It will be a ten round featherweight main event on the Golden Boy Promotions fight card. Antonio Escalante spoke about the fight. "It's another big great fight, hopefully hoping it will be just another fight like the last one, the difference is that I won't get hit as much. You know I am hoping for it to be a great fight." Golden Boy Promotions Vice President Raul Jaimes was on hand, and loves the excitement Escalante brings to El Paso. "Antonio is personal to us, and what I mean by that is that we have followed his career for a long time, and to be able to work with him as his promoter.. how can I saw this... These are the type of fighters that we have looked forward to working with."
Tickets go on sale at the UTEP Ticket office on Friday, July 9. The 7-fight card will take place August 6, 2010 at 7:30pm at the Haskins Center.
