Austin, Texas – The men’s 4x400m relay wrapped up Saturday on a high note posting the 12th-fastest time in the nation at the 86th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, presented by State Farm.
"The men's 4x400m relay finished off our Texas Relays on a high note," said head coach Mika Laaksonen. "Fourth position with a time of 3:08.03 is an excellent performance at this point of the season. Our guys know they will be ready to go a bit faster soon. I think this team is capable of running 3:05 or faster this season."
The lineup featured two freshmen, with Carnell Horn and Daniel Tarango and returners Abiola Onakoya and A-Shawni Mitchell. The squad crossed the finish line fourth with a season-best time of 3:08.03.
"They will go at it again in two weeks at home during the UTEP Invitational," said Laaksonen.
The Miners kicked off the final day of competition at Texas Relays with the men’s 4x200m relay. The squad featured sprinters Kristian Dillard, Abiola Onakoya, Sven Zellner and Anthony Wright. The team recorded a time of 1:25.29 finishing eighth overall out of 15 competitors.
Turning to the women’s team, Janice Jackson took the track in the 100m hurdles final. The C-USA Champion crossed the finish line with a time of 13.29 (W: 2.1) finishing eighth overall.
Stanford, Calif. - Anthony Rotich was the third collegiate runner to cross the finish line in the men’s section 1 of the 5,000m run. The distance runner clocked in the third-fastest time in the nation of 13:34.84. The Kenyans’ time is also a new personal best and the fourth best mark in school history.
All-American Risper Kimaiyo ran in her first 10,000m of her collegiate career and registered the third-fastest time in school history with a mark of 33:24.21. The senior also earned the No. 8 spot in the national rankings.
Also competing on the men’s side was Elphas Maiyo and Elkana Rotich in the men’s 10,000m. Maiyo finished 13th overall in the second section of the night posting a time of 29:41.19. Rotich registered a time of 30:17.27 in what proved to be a competitive race featuring 44 runners.
UTEP will return to action on Saturday, April 6th at the Texas Tech Open in Lubbock, Texas.
