The UTEP tennis team earned its first conference win since 2011 by beating Southern Miss. The Miners (10-9, 1-0 C-USA) took down the Golden Eagles (0-15, 0-4 C-USA), 6-1, on Friday afternoon at The Racquet Club of Memphis.
The Miners will take on No. 32 Memphis at 8:30 a.m. MT on Saturday.
“We played well today and winning this match was a good start to the weekend,” head coach Mark Roberts said. “We are looking forward to a good battle against Memphis tomorrow.”
Junior Rebeca Calvillo won another match at the No. 1 spot, upping her record to 11-2 at that spot. Calvillo handled Alexus Coats, 6-2, 6-4. Senior Martina Trierweiler recorded her eighth win at the No. 2 spot defeating Kate Lanier, 6-0, 6-3. Junior Gabi Vazquez won her match, 6-2, 6-2, over Elanor Grossman at No. 3.
UTEP’s two freshmen dominated their opponents in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Matilda Rose Tench shutdown Macie Case and Jamie-Leigh Michau was victorious over Emily Nettles.
On the doubles side, the team of Calvillo-Trierweiler won convincingly, 8-1, over the team of Coats-Grossman, while Anastasiya Sylenko and Tench beat the team of Case-Nettles by the same score.
