EL PASO- UTEP students who want to live in dorms might have to get a background check before moving on campus.
The Texas Senate successfully pushed a bill to the House with a unanimous vote of 30-0 that could give all public colleges and universities the ability to run background checks for all campus housing students. It's called Senate Bill 146 and if the House passes this, it will become an option, not a requirement for Texas schools.
D.P.S. will be providing the checks and the only campus employees allowed to see the information will be campus Security and Housing Directors. The background checks are not meant to prevent admission to the school, just to create a more secure environment for learning.
