The UTEP softball team is set to play seven games at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex this week. The Miners (10-15, 1-4 C-USA) will start with Siena (5-11) in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. MT on Tuesday.
This will be UTEP’s first-ever meeting with Siena. Game two is slated for 5 p.m. MT.
The Miners are coming off the weekend where they had to cancel another game due to inclement weather but was able to get two games in on Sunday. The Orange and Blue took the first game, 10-4, as senior Ashley Collazo hit a three-run home run but lost game two, 4-3, in the ninth. Southern Miss’ Mackenzie Sher hit a bases-loaded sac-fly to win the game.
Junior Alanna Leasau has been productive leading the squad with six long balls and 28 RBI. Freshman Kawehiokalani Netane is hitting .349 and is tied with senior Kayla Oranger with 15 runs scored. Oranger is batting .333 and leads the team with nine stolen bases, six off Chelsea Troupe’s school record (15). Junior Erika Arcuri leads the team in runs scored (17) and walks (11). Sophomore Ariel Armendariz has produced some positive numbers since officially making the roster on Feb. 23. The El Paso native leads the team with a .455 average, is tied second on the team with three doubles and has knocked in six runs.
In the circle, freshman Danielle Pearson has pitched 82.2 innings and has a team-leading five wins. Junior Colleen Hohman leads with 47 strikeouts and has four wins. Both have produced in the batters box with nine RBI each.
The Saints are currently on a three-game losing streak with their last loss coming at the hands of New Mexico, 5-2, in Albuquerque, N.M.
Jessika – Jo Sandrini and Alyssa Lancaster each have 10 RBI to lead Siena, while Paige Lloyd is hitting .440 with two home runs.
UTEP will face Siena again in another doubleheader on Wednesday, game one starting 1 p.m. MT.
