Senior forward Bandja Sy hit a 3-pointer with three seconds remaining in regulation to lead the New Mexico State men's basketball team to 69-66 win over UT Arlington on senior night. The Aggies (21-10, 14-4 WAC) finished the season with a 15-1 home record.
Sy finished his last regular season game in the Pan American Center with a game-high 19 points on 5-of-11 shooting. Sophomore guard K.C Ross-Miller added 12 points, and sophomore guard Daniel Mullings supplied 11. Senior forward Tyrone Watson did not play due to an ankle injury sustained in the game versus Louisiana Tech, March 7.
The Aggies led for the first 37 minutes until the Mavericks made a 3-pointer with 3:03 left for a 64-33 lead. NM State tied the game, 64-64, when freshman center Sim Bhullar made the first of two free throws with 45 seconds remaining. Bhullar ended with eight points and 12 rebounds.
UT Arlington hit a jumper on the following possession for a 66-64 lead with 15 seconds to play. Sy then answered with the go-ahead triple. After a Maverick turnover, sophomore forward Remi Barry made two free throws to seal the game.
The Aggies led from the tip and had a 38-23 halftime lead. NM State had two players in double figures with Sy leading the way with 14 points. Ross-Miller scored 12 points.
The Crimson and White shot 52.2 percent from the field (12-of-23) and 76.5 percent from the free-throw line (13-of-17). Bhullar led the Aggies in rebounding with 10, which is his third double-digit rebounding game of the season.
The Aggies head to Las Vegas, Nev., for defend their WAC Tournament Championship. NM State, the No. 3 seed, opens the tournament versus No. 6 seed Idaho, Thursday, March 14 at 1 p.m.
