UTEP senior Anete Steinberga has secured the final Conference USA Women’s Basketball Player of the Week award for the 2012-13 season, the league office announce Saturday. It marks the second time this season that Steinberga has been so honored.
Steinberga posted a double-double (22 points/17 rebounds) to help lead the Miners (20-9, 8-8 C-USA) to a 71-52 “Senior Night” victory against Tulane on March 8. Her effort aided in UTEP locking up the No. 5 seed at the upcoming C-USA Championships. The Orange and Blue will begin the defense of their 2012 tournament title when they challenge No. 12 seed Marshall on Wednesday.
Steinberga, the lone senior on the squad, converted the energy from an emotional pre-game ceremony into a fitting sendoff. She set career highs for rebounds (17) and blocked shots (three). The native of Latvia sunk 8-of-19 shots and 6-of-8 at charity stripe on the way to setting the school record for consecutive double-digit scoring games at 20.
UTEP will initiate action at the C-USA Championships against Marshall on March 13.
