WASHINGTON D.C. — The push continues to make the Organ Mountains a national monument. New Mexico Congressman Steve Pearce has introduced a bill on the floor of the U.S. House to create the monument. The bill would limit construction of any new roads in the mountains and would also outlaw mining in the area. Many Las Cruces residents and community leaders have also been pushing for creation of the monument, so long as the land remains open for grazing and other recreational uses. Pearce introduced a similar bill during the last session.
