The Borderlands World Champion boxer is getting a shot at another belt. According to the official Twitter account for Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, he has accepted a bout against Austin "No Doubt" Trout for May 4th at the MGM Grand.
NewsChannel 9 spoke with Austin's trainer Louie Burke Friday who said no contract had been signed yet but that they were hopeful adding that they had been in the final negotiating stages and expected an official announcement at any time. Previous online reports state the bout would be the co-main event on the Floyd Mayweather Jr. card.
Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KOs) is the current WBC junior middleweight champion and the 22-year old champ is expected to put his belt on the line against Trout (26-0, 14 KOs), the WBA junior middleweight titlist, in a champion vs. champion clash.
Trout challenged Alvarez after Austin defeated Miguel Cotto by unanimous decision in December at Madison Square Garden. Alvarez was in attendance expecting to face a winning Cotto after.
Austin currently lives and trains in Las Cruces, NM. Stay with KTSM.com for further updates.
