Menzies suspends Waston indefinitely
LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The future of NMSU Basketball player Tyrone Watson will depend on the charges filed against him after admitting to police he punched a 19-year-old NMSU student at a party, according to Athletics Director Dr. McKinley Boston.
Boston held a news conference Thursday afternoon after Head Coach Marvin Menzies announced earlier in the day Watson would not suit up against Texas State and was suspended indefinitely.
"Obviously we are all disappointed in his judgement and he acted inappropriately," Boston said. "We're extremely sorry for the victim."
In a police report, Tyrone Watson was listed as the only suspect in the incident where Rascon was allegedly choked, blacked out, and taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.
"He choked this guy out then he blacked out and he didn't know what happened to him," said Stephanie Campos, a friend of Rascon's who said she was at the party.
Boston said Watson told police he admitted to punching Rascon but did not beat him as witnesses have said.
"As I understand it was a punch and not a fight and not a beating as people refer to it." Boston said. "At the same time Tyrone (Watson) is a big guy and the guy that he hit is not a big guy."
A family member said Rascon has facial fractures, 10 stitches, and a broken nose and went back to the hospital Monday night after having difficulty breathing.
Campos added she thinks the attack happened after Watson became angry at Rascon after he thought he was flirting with a girl Watson knew.
Boston said Head Coach Marvin Menzies suspended the senior forward indefinitely prior to the team's game against Texas State Thursday night.
He added he is not certain when or if Watson will suit up again.
Boston said he will be in charge of disciplinary action if Waston is charged with a felony, but he would automatically be suspended if that's the case.
Coach Menzies would discipline Watson if he's charged with a misdemeanor.
Charges had not been filed as of Thusday afternoon, but Rascon's family did say they will be pressing charges.
