The New Mexico State men's basketball team opened its WAC road trip to the Lone Star State with an 86-72 win at Texas State. The victory is the Aggies' eighth straight (14-8, 8-2 WAC).
Senior forward Bandja Sy posted his third double-double of the season with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore guard Daniel Mullings provided 22 points, and freshman center Sim Bhullar added 10 points. Sophomore forward Remi Barry also scored 10 points, which is a career-high mark.
The Aggies had a 45-36 halftime advantage after a game-high 16 points from Sy. He was 6-of-7 in the first half after hitting his first six shots. As a team, NM State was 55.6 percent from the field (15-of-27) and 71.4 percent from the 3-point line (5-of-7). The Aggies were also solid at the free-throw line with a 90.9 percent (10-of-11).
Mullings was also in double digits with 10 points and four assists, and Bhullar added eight points.
With an 8-of-10 start to the game, the Aggies steadily built a lead in the first half. NM State had its first double-digits lead with 4:28 remaining in the first half when redshirt forward/center B.J. West hit a 3-pointer. Four different Aggies hit triples in the first 20 minutes of action.
The Aggies continued to shoot well in the second half 55.6 percent (15-of-27) and didn't allow the Bobcats to get any closer than eight points in the final period.
The Aggies continue their road trip at UTSA, Saturday, Feb. 2 at 5 p.m. in San Antonio, Texas.
