SANTA FE, NM — Some controversial gun legislation in New Mexico may not even reach the house floor. The bill would require state background checks for people who buy guns in private transactions and at gun shows. The legislation stalled Monday night on an eight to eight committee vote. Opponents called the bill a sloppy piece of legislation that would create bureaucracy, but would do nothing to improve public safety. The bill could still be revived and brought to the committee for another hearing.
