SANTA FE, NM — New legislation in the New Mexico State House would protect companies at Spaceport America from liability lawsuits, but not to the extent you might think. Senate Bill 240 would still allow space travelers to sue manufacturers and suppliers in the event of a disaster. Spaceport America and its tenant, Virgin Galactic, agreed to the concession, and also to a provision that will require Spaceport companies to obtain insurance coverage of at least a million dollars for all space flight activities. The legislation allows for lawsuits when "an act or omission causes injury, damage, or death to a passenger." The two hour space flights will cost $200,000.
