Five Sunland Park race horses earned 2012 AQHA Championship titles in the award ceremony held at Heritage Place in Oklahoma City on Wednesday night.
Three-time Sunland Park Quarter Horse of the Meet Rylees Boy earned the Champion Aged Gelding and Aged Division Champion awards following a stellar 2012 campaign. The hard charging gelding won the Bank of America New Mexico Challenge Championship at Sunland Park for the third straight year. He followed that up with big wins in the Challenge Championship final at Prairie Meadows and the Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos.
870 yard specialist All About Larry was named the 2012 AQHA Racing Distance Champion. The Sunland Park star won the Red Cell Distance last spring and then won major stakes races at Lone Star Park and Prairie Meadows. All About Larry was ridden by Salvador Martinez and trained by John Stinebaugh.
Pj Chick In Black was the third Sunland Park champ to earn an award. The sensational New Mexico-bred filly was named the AQHA Champion Two-year-old filly. The daughter of Desirio won the New Mexican Spring Futurity at Sunland Park and the Ruidoso Quarter Horse Futurity.
West Texas Futurity winner El Duero earned the AQHA Champion two-year-old gelding award.
2012 Championship at Sunland Park winner Prospect to the Top took home the AQHA Champion Aged Stallion award.
Racing at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino resumes on Friday at 12:25 p.m. The $85,000 Pepsi Cola Stakes is the featured event on Saturday with a 12 horse field.
