EL PASO TX — The closed session of the EPISD's board meeting ended just after 9 Tuesday with the announcement of two new hires.
They hired Manuel Castruita as the new Director of Guidance Services. He has years of experience with YISD as an educator and councilor. He's replacing Kathleen Ortega, the former guidance services director who resigned effective last month.
She admitted to having documents three years ago that revealed a cheating scandal.
The other hire tonight was of the in-house legal council. They hired Linda Samples who works mostly with school districts with a company called baskind and hosford.
Interim Superintendent Vernon Butler had this to say, "that was one of the recommendations that came from tea back a year or so ago and we thought based on the size of the district. There are in house legal councils throughout the state of Texas. And we just believe that would be a benefit to our school district having the in house legal council Someone that we can rely on and work with on a regular basis. "
No idea yet on salaries or start dates for either hire.
The other hot topic tonight: Board members say they're protecting the will of the people by requesting a review of Texas Education Agency Commissioner Williams' decision to take over the board by appointing five board managers.
Tuesday, the board met with their attorney to discuss their course of action. No announcement as far as that's concerned.
