El Paso — City Council on Tuesday awarded a contract of slightly more than 40 million dollars to the Jordan-Hunt joint venture construction partnership. This spring, the joint venture will begin to build the downtown baseball stadium, on a schedule to complete by March 2014 enough of the ballpark so that the AAA El Paso Padres can begin their season in April. Construction details may continue after that.
Since 2000, Hunt Construction has built ten of the last 15 major league basball stadiums.
The city's new, higher hotel room taxes are intended to re-pay much of the stadium cost.
