For the second straight season UTEP soccer standout Azia Nicholson has garnered All-Central Region honors (third team) from the National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA), it was recently announced by the organization.
Nicholson joins former Miner standouts Tameka Sumter and Jami Tullius as the only individuals in program history to receive multiple all-region nods. Overall nine Miners have combined to receive a total of 13 all-region distinctions, with all but one of those coming during the Kevin Cross era.
“UTEP soccer is very proud of Azia Nicholson’s great accomplishment,” Cross said. “Being named to the All-Region team is a huge honor as there as so many talented players on the teams in the central region. She has worked very hard, and it is great honor for the central region coaches to recognize her. She is committed to help lead the team to a great 2013 season.”
Nicholson, who has also been lauded with a spot on the All-Conference USA teams the past two seasons, enjoyed a quality campaign as a junior in 2012. She was second in the squad in goals (six) and points (15). Nicholson had an impressive ratio of goals to shots on target, with her six tallies requiring only 13 shots on goal. She also showed off her versatility by being used on defense when needed, marking the top players in the league.
The rising senior also took care of business in the classroom this year, earning placement on the C-USA All-Academic team.
