Ricardo Montalvo Sentencing Takes Place Thursday Morning
El Paso — A former Border Patrol Agent will be sentenced Thursday morning. 28-year old Ricardo Montalvo has been convicted of attempting to deliver arms into Mexico.
Montalvo pleaded guilty to gun smuggling conspiracy charges months after he was arrested.
He and his girlfriend, Carla Gonzales-Ortiz were arrested in April of this year. His girlfriend pleaded guilty as well. She was sentenced earlier in November to an additional year of supervised release on top her time already served. She was found guilty of not reporting the smuggling scheme to federal officials.
According to the indictment, Montalvo bought ammunition and firearms simiar to the ones drug cartels use. Even flare launchers cartels would turn into grenade launchers.
Prosecutors say the defendant faces a maximum of 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
