SANTA FE, NM — New Mexico's oldest survivor of World War 2's Bataan Death March died last week at the age of 99.
Virgil Wallace was buried Monday in Tatum, NM according to the New Mexico Department of Veteran's Services.
Wallace served in the Coast Guard Artillery Unit that was forced to surrender to Japanese forces in World War Two.
Tens of thousands of troops were forced to march to Japanese prison camps in what became known as the Bataan Death March.
It's now commemorated every spring near White Sands.
Wallace received the Bronze Star and many other awards for his service.
