LAS CRUCES — Horace Carlos Solomon Jr. was sentenced to life in prison for the brutal 2011 murder of his estranged wife, Jennie Bates. A judge also sentenced him to an additional 40 1/2 years for additional charges.
Solomon was convicted of first degree homicide, first degree kidnapping, aggravated burglary, two counts of intentional child abuse, two counts of false imprisonment and Interference with communications.
Solomon broke into the woman's home and beat her, then repeatedly stabbed her with a kitchen knife in front of three young children.
One of those children was present during Solomon's sentencing and told the courtroom about previous incidents in which the child witnessed Solomon abuse Bates.
The child asked the judge to impose the full sentence allowed by law. Doña Ana County Attorney Amy Orlando argued for the same.
