EL PASO TX — EPISD is giving the community the opportunity to speak up and help shape its future, with scheduled meetings for the next couple weeks.
It's all part of the ongoing search for a new superintendent. EPISD hired a company to listen to the community, especially parents, about what they want in a new leader. this all comes a day before tomorrow's regularly scheduled school board meeting.
Local Four News sat down with City Representative Susie Byrd who is scheduled to speak at tomorrow's meeting. Byrd has been very outspoken about her feelings towards the EPISD school board. In fact, she is leading a community political action group to rally and collect signatures to present to the board tomorrow.
She says the purpose of all of this is to fix the broken district and ask the school district to identify anyone else linked to the cheating schemes that put former superintendent Dr. Lorenzo Garcia in jail. Byrd and the members of "Kids First! Reform EPISD" will stage a rally during the school board meeting. Byrd and State Representative Marissa Marques will then address the school board during public forum along with students and parents.
As for tonight's community superintendent search, Byrd says its been done before and proved to be unsuccessful.
"You know what they did that same thing when they hired Dr.Garcia, um so you know we know what the results of that is. i think that there are some systemic issues within the organization that have led to the failure and lack of accountability for teachers and administrators that have chosen to cheat," said Byrd.
She says during tomorrow's rally, the petition and her speech will all be aimed at one thing: to ask the current board members up for re-election not to run and for the ones that have more time on their term, to step down.
