The Washington Nationals advanced to the postseason for the first time in 79 years, and made their postseason appearance count, thanks to Jayson Werth. The outfielder hit a game winning solo home run in the bottom of the 9th inning tonight against the St. Louis Cardinals for a 2-1 victory, advancing the team to a decisive game five tomorrow.
Also advancing to a game 5, Baltimore defeated the New York Yankees, 2-1, forcing a game five tomorrow. In other action, San Francisco defeated Cincinnati, 6-4, winning that series, 3-2, while Detroit shut out Oakland, 6-0, winning that series, 3-2.
