The New Mexico State volleyball team defeated San Jose State 4-1 (25-21, 25-20, 23-25, 25-23) in Spartan Gym, Saturday, Oct. 6 in San Jose, Calif.
With the win NM State moves to 12-5 on the year and 6-1 in Western Athletic Conference play. SJSU falls to 8-10 on the year and 4-4 in league play. Sophomore outside hitter Meredith Hays bounced back after Thursday's loss and tallied a double-double posting 14 kills and 12 digs against the Spartans.
NM State outhit the Spartans .267- .164 but was out-blocked by SJSU 14.5-9. Four different Aggies tallied double-digit kill figures including junior outside hitter Lauren Loerch, who marked 11. Junior Preslie Alexander had 10 kills on a .391 hitting percentage and junior Desiree Scott marked 10 kills on a .353 hitting percentage.
Junior Ciara Brown joined sophomore Maggi Jo Keffury at the setter position to run the 6-2 offense with Brown marking a team-high 28 assists. Keffury ended the night with 21 assists to go along with five digs. Junior defensive specialist Stephanie Ziegler dug up 14 balls while junior Hannah Walker tallied 11 digs.
Set one saw five ties and two lead changes and the Aggies jump ahead 15-10 midway through. NM State extended the lead to as many as six at 20-16 before winning 25-21. The Aggies hit .300 in the set while siding-out 72 percent of the time.
The Aggies took set two 25-20 posting 16 kills on 31 swings. Alexander and Loerch led the way in set two with four kills each to give NM State a 2-0 lead heading into intermission. SJSU came out of the break winning set three 25-23 as the Spartans outhit NM State .100-.054. The Aggies marked nine attack errors and only three blocks in the loss.
NM State wrapped up the match with a 25-23 win in set four as the Aggies rebounded with 15 kills on 33 swings in the set. Hays led the Aggies with five kills an only one error as the team finished the set with a .394 attack percentage.
The Aggies return home to take on UTSA, Thursday, Oct. 11 and Texas State, Saturday, Oct. 13. Both matches are scheduled to start at 7 p.m. (MT) and will air on TV as a part of the AggieVision Productions. For complete information on all Aggie sports go online to www.NMStateSports.com .
