The mayor of Anthony, Texas was arrested Friday afternoon inside city hall. Anthony Police Chief Carlos Enriquez says Texas Rangers came to city hall at about 1:30 Friday afternoon and spoke with Mayor Art Franco. He says they told the mayor they had a warrant for his arrest, and escorted him out of the building. County records show the warrant stems from a 2010 investigation for tampering with evidence. Franco had been arrested in February of this year for what he said was part of the same investigation. Prior to that arrest, investigators had searched Franco's home. Enriquez says he wants to reassure the town this will not affect them whatsoever.
"It is a blow for the town. I know that we will bounce back from this and we have faith in our administration that we are going to keep moving forward and the department and the citizens have nothing to worry about. We have full confidence in the administration that is in place right now," said Chief Enriquez.
Franco is serving his 10th term in office. He's been mayor for 19 years. The Anthony native has also served on the Anthony Independent School Board and town council. We did attempt to speak with family, but nobody came to the door.
