LAS CRUCES, NM — There's a little more clarity on the status of NMSU President Dr. Barbara Couture. Local 4 News first told you about these developments Tuesday.
On Thursday, the Board of Regents Chairman Mike Cheney confirmed Couture asked to be placed on leave this week.
The university released a statement saying Couture was on leave as of Tuesday.
Cheney would not elaborate any further as to her future with the university, but said they will discuss personnel matters in a closed special meeting next week.
"There may be speculation and rumors out there in the market place and I typically don't comment on rumors in my business and wouldn't do so on this matter as well. We got the meeting scheduled and we are going to discuss matters in that meeting as appropriate," said Cheney.
The meeting will be Monday at 1 pm. at Corbett Center. A portion of the meeting will be open to the public at 3 p.m.
University staff hadn't received word either, until a statement clarifying provost and vice president Wendy Wilkins' role while Couture is on leave.
The statement said, "Provost Wilkins is temporarily assuming the administrative responsibilities of the president in her absence, pursuant to NMSU policy."
