EL PASO — If you're a fan of free food and pointers on healthy eating, head over to Bassett Place Mall this Saturday.
The City of El Paso Department of Public Health organized an event to raise awareness about obesity and diet-related diseases through "Food Day 2012."
The event features cooking demonstrations, samples, nutrional education in spanish and english, gardening tips, games and more.
The event takes place at Bassett Place Mall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The address is 6101 Gateway West.
Organizers said Food Day is a grassroots movement made up of individuals and organizations passionate about promoting a healthy, sustainable, and just food system. Organizers are also working to raise awareness about food insecurity in the community by promoting a canned food drive that includes local high school students and City of El Paso employees. It will benefit the El Pasoans Fighting Hunger program.
“This is an opportunity to encourage the public to consider hunger issues in our community and we would like to help the El Pasoans Fighting Hunger stock their food pantry in preparation for the holidays,” said Sue Beatty, Health Education and Training Manager. Those who attend can bring at least 3 cans of food and be registered to win great door prizes.
