Anthony Rotich and Risper Kimaiyo were named Conference USA Cross Country Athletes of the week the league announced Tuesday.
Rotich led the men’s team to a one-two-three place finish in the 5K race as UTEP kicked off the 2012 campaign at the annual Lori Fitzgerald Invitational. The freshman crossed the finish line first posting a time of 14:37.81 in his first cross country meet as a Miner. The men’s team claimed the meet crown with a total of 29 points defeating I-10 rival New Mexico State.
Kimaiyo was named co-athlete of the week for the 12th time of her career. The three-time cross country All-American claiming her fourth consecutive crown at the annual Lori Fitzgerald Invitational. The senior clocked in a time of 17:35.17 in the women’s 5K leading the squad to a second-place finish.
The Miners will compete at the Kachina Classic in Las Cruces, N.M. on Saturday.
