LAS CRUCES — New Mexico State Police arrested Maria Torrez, 21, for allegedly trying to smuggle drugs to an inmate at the Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility.
According to the New Mexico Corrections Department, Torrez was visiting an inmate at the jail when a corrections officer noticed she had something in her mouth.
After questioning Torrez, officers found she had 59 stripes and 5 tablets of a prescription drug called suboxone.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, suboxone is a medication approved for the treatment of opiate dependence.
Torrez is charged with two felony counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, and bringing contraband into places of imprisonment.
