An elementary school student in Las Cruces was one of 44 children selected to attend the first ever Kids' State Dinner with First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House.
Emma Kinney, 9, is a fourth-grader at Hillrise Elementary.
Emma won an essay contest to create an original, nutritious lunchtime recipe.
A total of 1,200 entries were evaluated by a panel of judges. One child from each state, three territories and the District of Columbia was invited to attend the dinner. The kids were between 8 and 12 years old.
President Obama joined the First Lady in greeting the winners and praising them for their efforts.
Emma said she would like to encourage others to eat healthy.
"I really thought it was a really good experience. I think that that all the other people also earned it because they all cook delicious healthy meals, and so I think everybody else should cook healthy meals as well," said Emma.
Emma was accompanied by her mother, Tammie Kinney who said, "We were both very excited to be there. We felt really lucky to get to experience it. It was obviously a once in a lifetime memorable moment together."
