Sally Ride has passed away. Ride was the first American woman to travel into space. In 1983, she was the chosen as a mission specialist for mission STS-7 aboard the shuttle Challenger and again on the Challenger in 1984. Sally remained a strong supporter of the nation's human spaceflight programs. She served on the Augustine Committee on the future of Human Space Flight in 2009. It was the work of that Committee that helped inform the actions taken by the Congress in enacting the 2010 NASA Authorization Act which helped define the present-and future-course of the nation's human spaceflight program.
