Rialto, California- Investigators provided more details about the death of Rodney King, whose videotaped beating by police in 1991 sparked riots in Los Angeles.
Police said they received a 9-1-1 call from King's fiancé Cynthia Kelley around 5:25 early Sunday morning. She said he was at the bottom of their backyard pool. Responders performed c-p-r, but could not revive him. Police said Kelley told them she had been speaking with King by the pool moments before his death.
"During one of the conversations she had went back in the residence and she heard a splash. She came out to see what had happened, and she found Mr. King at the bottom of the pool," said Capt. Randy DeAnda, Rialto Police Dept.
King was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead at 6:11 a.m. Je was 47. Police are investigating the death as a drowning, but the exact cause is not known at this time.
