LAS CRUCES — Wednesday marked the death of a Las Cruces rollover victim who was seriously injured from a weekend crash.
Joshua Garcia, who turned 29 on Tuesday, was involved in a single-vehicle rollover crash at around 1:30 a.m. Saturday, June 9, near the intersection of Picacho Avenue and Roadrunner Lane.
Las Cruces Police traffic investigators learned that Garcia was driving a 1997 Ford F-150 pickup northbound on Roadrunner Lane when he apparently ran a stop sign at Picacho and struck an irrigation canal embankment. The pickup went airborne over the canal, flipped and landed on its roof.
Traffic investigators believe speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the crash.
When police arrived on scene Garcia, the only occupant of the vehicle, was pinned within the pickup. Las Cruces firefighters freed Garcia from the wreckage and he was initially transported to Mountain View Regional Medical Center.
Garcia was subsequently airlifted to University Medical Center of El Paso where his condition worsened. He was pronounced dead Wednesday afternoon.
