RUIDOSO, NM — As the destructive Little Bear Fire rages in the Ruidoso area, the American Red Cross El Paso is sending a disaster relief team to assist those affected by the disaster.
Four Red Cross team members have deployed to assist in the ongoing relief efforts. The El Pasoans will help Red Cross teams with sheltering, feeding and disaster assessment operations. The Red Cross of New Mexico has set up shelters for evacuees at Ruidoso High School in Ruidoso and at Trinity Baptist Church in Capitan. It is expected that the team will be on site helping those in need for about a week.
The Little Bear Fire has destroyed an estimated 35 structures and burned 36,000 acres. Several neighborhoods remain under evacuation orders as the fire is only 30% contained.
“We’re glad to help our neighbors fight through the effects of this disaster,” said Mark Matthys, Executive Director, American Red Cross El Paso. “Families need our help right now with food and shelter. We’ll do our best to make them comfortable and connect them with resources for recovery.”
