Undefeated WBA world Junior Middleweight Champion, Austin Trout, of Las Cruces, New Mexico, coming off his sensational victory over contender Delvin Rodriguez on Showtime June 2nd, 2012, Austin is eagerly looking forward to being the main speaker at the Hall of fames banquet. His trainer, Louie Burke, also of Las Cruces, will also speak about Austin’s rise to boxing prominence.
The event is sold out but the press is welcome to attend and interview Trout and the Southwest Legends being inducted. Also arriving from Ft. Worth, Texas for a legends award is Cliff ‘Magic’ Thomas. Cliff became El Paso’s first world champion in any sport back in 1980 when he stopped undefeated PKA World kickboxing Champion, Gordon Franks, as a 20-1 underdog. Cliff than blazed his way to seven world titles in five different weight divisions in his twenty five year fighting career.
Jennifer Han is also a world and national champion and she has earned a berth in both the Boxing and Martial Arts Hall of Fames. There will also be another two time national boxing champion, Jorge Munoz, who has also won six state boxing titles, standing tall with accomplishments similar to Han’s.
Rocky, Louie, and the late Sammy Burke of Las Cruces, New Mexico, boxing legends already, will be duly honored for their local and national accomplishments. Rocky and Louie were state champions, their father a boxer, marine, and champion trainer. Rocky is presently a world class referee and official and of course, Louie is trainer of world champion, Austin Trout.
Acclaimed sportswriter, Bill Knight, military hero, Francisco Alvarado, Mexican Champion Rene Herrera, along with martial arts masters, Benny Benavides, Master Bae H. Han, and Master Tim Meek, and the late James Butler of El Paso Jiu Jitsu help make this ceremony tops in El Paso History. And it will be as renowned writer and our Master of Ceremonies, Ray Sanchez, brings us to countdown on Saturday.
