The public is invited to attend Southwest Explosion IV this Saturday, June 9th at the Sammy Burke Youth Boxing Center in Las Cruces. The event will be hosted by the Las Cruces Police Athletic League (PAL) Boxing Club. The event brings amateur boxers from the ages of 8-years-old to 34-years-old, male and female, from around New Mexico and West Texas to compete against the Las Cruces PAL Boxers.
Headlining the event will be Edmundo Guzman, age 17, of Las Cruces. Guzman won the Silver medal in the 2012 USA Boxing National tournament. Other Las Cruces boxers currently matched are Mike De La Houssey, Kalil Gilbert, Freddy Soto, Edwin Acosta and Juan Jimenz in the co-main event. More matches will be set on the day of the event
Doors open at 5 p.m. and fights will begin around 6 p.m. Admission cost is $10 per person. Children four and under get in free. The Sammy Burke Youth Boxing Center is located at 700 N. Solano Ave., just north of the Aquatic Center. The center is home to the Las Cruces PAL Boxing Club, a program that takes at-risk youth off the streets and teaches them discipline through boxing. All proceeds will go back to the Las Cruces PAL Boxing Club. Las Cruces PAL will donate $1 out of every $10 collected from entry fees to the State Local Boxing Committee for future state qualifying events.
