Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino is hosting a Jacky Martin Fundraiser now through Sunday, Feb. 26. The fundraiser will help support our efforts in assisting the legendary 7-time All American Futurity winning rider Jacky Martin with his rehabilitation progress. Fans are asked to place a wager or any type of donation for Martin in the barrels located throughout the facility. A special Quarter Horse feature race (4th race) will be named in Martin’s honor on Sunday. Wagers placed for Martin’s cause can be any denomination from any racetrack.
Long considered one of Quarter Horse racing’s greatest riders, Martin was seriously injured in a spill at Ruidoso Downs late last summer. Prior to the accident, he had qualified eventual All American Futurity winner Ochoa.
In 2010, the Quarter Horse riding legend returned to action with a meteoric rise after a four year absence. He won the Rainbow Futurity, All American Derby and All American Gold Cup and finished a close second in the All American Futurity. Martin returned to Sunland Park in December of 2010 and won three major stakes races in three days. Martin won the $350,000 Championship at Sunland Park aboard Noconi and the $178,647 Sunland Winter Quarter Horse Futurity with Giorgino on Dec. 26. He also guided Whathaveigottado to victory in the $138,471 Sunland Park Winter Quarter Horse Derby on Dec. 29. The amazing year end surge helped Martin secure the American Quarter Horse riding championship for 2010. His mounts earned over $3.2 million.
Martin’s extensive rehabilitation has been extremely costly. Monetary donations can be sent directly to: Jacky Martin – Tracy Martin Special Account, Ft. Gibson State Bank, P.O. Box 130, Ft. Gibson, Oklahoma 74434. Contact: Susan Chapman at (918) 478-2437.
