The UTEP softball team (4-1) suffered their first loss of the season in Las Cruces, N.M. against New Mexico State on Tuesday. The Aggies (5-0) run-ruled the Miners in a six inning 13-3 affair.
NMSU never looked back after jumping out to an early 6-0 lead after the second inning. Cynthia Villastrigo started the game pitching only 1.1 innings giving up six runs, five earned, on four hits and three walks.
Kellie Eastman got UTEP on the board in the second inning after she blasted the first home run of her career. Chelsea Troupe belted a solo home run of her own to cut the Aggie lead to four.
Colleen Hohman, who made her second relief appearance, held NMSU scoreless for the third and fourth innings. NMSU put distance between them and the Miners with their third three-run inning of the game in the fifth.
Camilla Carrera ripped her fourth homer of the young season in the sixth inning for the Miners third and final run of the game.
Jennings ripped a grand slam to left field off Hohman (4.1 inn., 10 hits, 7 runs, 1 strikeout) in the sixth inning to end the game.
UTEP will travel to Lafayette, La. to take part in the Mardi Gras Classic. The three day tournament starts on Feb. 17 and concludes on Feb. 19.
