Junior Justice Chirchir ran away with the individual title at the 2011 Conference USA Cross Country Championships at the Wildcat Golf Club in Houston, Texas.
Chirchir lead the UTEP men’s squad to a second place finish, posting a personal best of 23:39 in the 8K race. Following closely behind was last year’s champion, Elkana Rotich who finished second with a season-best time of 23:51. Solomon Gardea took All-Conference USA Second Team honors clocking in a season-best time of 24:30. Also taking second team honors was Abel Koskey with a season-high of 24:36. The fifth Miner to cross the finish line was Juan Blanco earning All-Conference USA Third Team accolades with a personal-best of 25:18. Ramon Garcia ran his best race of the season with a personal best of 27:08.
Tulsa regained the league title with 35 points, UTEP scored 48 points and Houston finished the meet with 71 points.
Risper Kimaiyo led the women’s team finishing in second place earning All-Conference USA First Team honors clocking in a season-best time of 16:14 in the 5k race. Jackline Ekai posting a career-high with a time of 18:23. The third Miner to cross the finish line was Karina Garcia with a time of 18:35. Senior Kitria Stewart ran her best race of the season clocking in at 18:58. Freshman Laura Delgado was the final Miner to cross the finish line with a time of 19:05.
The UTEP women’s team finished in fifth place with 162 points. SMU took first place with 57 points.
The Miners will return to action on Nov. 12 for the NCAA Mountain Regional in Provo, Utah.
