The New Mexico State volleyball team is set for the Annual Alumni Match, which is free of charge, Saturday, Aug. 20, at 3pm in the Pan American Center.
The current Aggies, led by senior All-American setter Jennah DeVries and senior libero Kelsi Phillips, will take on former Aggies such as former All-WAC selections Whitney Woods and Krista Altermatt in Las Cruces.
"We are excited for this event each year because it gives the fans a chance to catch up with the former players they came to watch," head coach Mike Jordan said. "This also gives us a chance to play someone other than ourselves and let's us see where we stand and what we need to work on."
Aggie volleyball fans have a chance to see what the 2011 team has in store with All-WAC returner Kelsey Brennan in the middle, while red-shirt sophomore Stephanie Ziegler returns to the court after a season-ending injury sidelined her last year.
Freshmen outside hitters Bradley Nash and Meredith Hays are ready to show Aggie fans what they can do at NM State for the next few seasons, and middle hitters Michelle Kuester and Desiree Scott have been working hard in the off-season to prepare for the year. "We have a lot of depth at every position and we are very athletic," Jordan said.
Also playing on the Alumni team this year is former setter Alyssa Gintant, who played for the 2008 Aggie team which made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Two-time first team All-WAC honoree Kayleigh Giddens is set to play on the outside after setting records at NM State in 2010.
The NM State volleyball team will be handing out posters and signing autographs at the Mesilla Valley Mall, Saturday, Aug. 20 from 12-1pm. Fans can take their cameras along and get pictures and autographs from the team before they start the 2011 volleyball season.
