Zoo surgeons remove avocet's necrotic toe

Thursday, April 18, 2013 - 6:45pm

EL PASO, TX (KDBC) — The veterinary staff at the El Paso Zoo performed surgery on a male American avocet Thursday morning to remove a necrotic toe.

Zoo officials said they had been treating a skin crack on his toe for several months and recently infection set in that our antibiotics were not able to fight off. In favor of saving the foot, the decision was made to amputate the small portion of infected toe to save the foot from becoming infected.
