LAS CRUCES — A zoning authority made a decision on the possible commercial development of land near "A" mountain in Las Cruces. The extra territorial zoning authority voted at 3:00 a.m. Thursday morning to deny a request to a zoning change for an area near the new Centennial High school. The owners of the land and Dona Ana sand and gravel wanted the authority to grant them commercial use zoning to further explore the possibility of building new businesses in the area. The authority heard from dozens of area residents in opposition saying the new development that would hurt the recreational opportunities and take away from the allure of the mountains. The authority denied the request saying there should be a different study done by staff to determine the impact a change in zoning would have in the area. The owners plan on brining the issue up again in sometime in the future.
