El Paso, Texas (KDBC) — Some frustrated parents are demanding an explanation as to why an Ysleta Independent School District school board member hasn't paid her property taxes in three years.
Newschannel 9 was the first to tell you last night that Ana Dueñez owes more than $4100 in back taxes, nearly $1300 for this year and about $3000 for last year.
Property taxes are predominately used to fund school districts in the state. More than $1,100 of Dueñez's bill is in penalties and interest, and tax officials tell us that tab only grows larger the longer someone waits to pay.
"Our delinquent tax attorneys will eventually contact them and try to get them on a payment plan as well. If that is not possible the next step is then to possibly continue with litigation," explained Maria Ramos, El Paso Tax Deputy Administrator.
"I think it's outrageous that she has neglected to do her community obligation and I really feel, I don't know how you can go about making her pay, but she is depleting the Ysleta School District of funds that are badly needed," said frustrated parent Lupe Dudd.
We tried to talk with Dueñez Monday about why she hasn't paid her taxes, but she declined comment.
