EL PASO - We told you about an El Paso teacher who spent nearly two months in a Mexican prison for drugs she says were planted in her car.
The FBI agreed.
Now, Ana Martinez is 2012 teacher of the year by the Bilingual Educators Emphasizing Multi-cultural Settings.
From Mexican prison in Juarez, to teacher of the year.
Ana Martinez has survived it all through her love for teaching.
"Thanks to my profession I was able to not become insane," Martinez said.
Last year, Ana was named La Fe Preparatory School's 2010-2011 teacher of the year, just one week before she was wrongly accused of trying to cross 100 pounds of marijuana over the border.
She spent 2 months in the Cereso Prison in Juarez and even then she continued to educate those around her.
"When I started teaching inside the Cereso it's like I was back into my normal life. I felt like I was going to finish my day teaching and I was going to go back home. So I felt free when I was doing that," Martinez said.
Ana says teaching the women in prison was rewarding and it motivated her to never lose hope and now being recognized as BEEMS teacher of the year, she says this will show the community the one thing that will never change.
"I feel very grateful its a way to show people that I'm back into my normal life that I'm doing what I like the most which is being a teacher. An that I enjoy it like I used to do before that thing happened to me," Martinez said.
